“God Willow, what are you doing sitting in the dark like this? Why are you upset?” Scully babbled as she rushed to be at Willow’s side.

Scully took the bottle from Willow, and wiped the tears from her cheek. “Please, you’ve got to talk to someone, don’t you?”

Willow gazed at the cross on the wall. Scully turned to see what she was looking at. “Would you prefer I turned the lights back off?” she asked.

Willow nodded shakily, and watched Scully’s graceful movements as she rose and switched off the light. Scully kneeled in front of Willow.

Willow pulled Scully down beside her, taking the pressure off the older woman’s knees. “It’s okay, it’s clean” she whispered.

Of course it is, thought Scully, Tara would never let a guest into the house if it wasn’t.

“Now tell me what the matter is” Scully insisted. Since she had been around Reyes, she had started to become sensitive to energy too, and when something was wrong with someone, she knew it. That’s how she felt at the moment.

“I lost someone recently”

“This is the friend you were visiting?”

“Yeah” Willow paused, gathering courage “Well, we were more then friends really. I loved her, guess I still do”

A silence fell between them.

“So…how long were you with this woman?” Asked Scully, her senses heightened by curiosity.

“Well, I first met her 3 years ago, and soon after we started dating. Then” Willow was uncertain of how to say this “Do you believe in magic?” she asked.

“I’ve seen plenty of strange things, things I can’t explain, so try me.”

“The Halloween before last we had a fight and I didn’t want her to remember it, so I cast a spell” she gulped

“What were you fighting about?” pressed Scully.

“I had an addiction…to magic. It started out small when she got upset when I used magic to put up decorations for Halloween. Later that night we had to find a friend’s sister, and she thought I was mad to even suggest…” she took a deep breath “to suggest shifting everyone in town who wasn’t 16 into another dimension. I guess in hindsight it was a crazy idea, but at the time I was so dependant on magic I had to use it for everything – getting dressed, cleaning, all the menial tasks that I didn’t want to waste time on. That night she said if I didn’t give up magic for a week, she would leave me.”

“Keep going,” Scully urged.

Willow inhaled. “The next morning I cast the spell, but I accidentally made myself and all my friends forget who we were. As soon as we managed to break the spell she left.”

“That wasn’t the last time you saw her before...?” gasped Scully.

“No, no it wasn’t thank god. After she left I went crazy and burned out my magic in one night. Two nights later, I’d almost killed my best friend’s sister, and they all decided it was time I got off the magic. So I gave it up. It was so hard, that first week, then it got easier, but not by much. All that really kept me going was the thought that Tara might have me back at the end of it all.”

“Tara was your girlfriend?”

“Yeah.”

“Then what happened?”

“Well, after a few months she turned up at my place. It started out as a discussion, but soon words weren’t enough. That night was probably the best night we had together, our fondest memory” Willow was crying, reliving the emotion. “Two days later, it happened. Just as my life became complete she…she”

“Shhh…it’s okay” whispered Scully, letting Willow cry on her shoulder.

“I did everything I could, I even tried magic, but nothing worked. I was so frustrated, I felt so helpless and angry that I lost control again. I almost destroyed everything, everyone on this entire earth. I was so ashamed, that I’d dare destroy so many innocent people because of the way I felt.” Willow wiped her eyes self-consciously “Her family brought her back to San Diego to be buried, even though they practically disowned her when they found out she was gay. They tried to stop me coming to the funeral, but I did anyway. Afterward I just drifted, trying to find who I was without her. Now I’m going home to see my friends.”

“So you were upset because you were thinking about her?” Scully asked.

“Yes and no. Her father is a general and…and he was here tonight. He called me a pervert and accused me of killing her, all because he needs someone to blame.”

“That bastard” whispered Scully, holding Willow against her as the younger woman sobbed. She was reminded of Mulder, his initial abduction, then her discovery that he was dead. The difference was that he had pulled through, though it was little comfort because he couldn’t be with her. Yes, Scully knew what Willow was going through all right, but she decided to save that story for another day.

“You going to be okay?” asked Scully.

“Sure, I guess”

Scully rose and helped Willow to stand.

“Whoa” Willow’s vision blurred as the alcohol’s effect hit her. She leaned on Scully for support. “I need to pee. Will you take me to the bathroom?”

Scully guided Willow down the hall, avoiding as many guests as possible. “I’ll be right outside, okay?” she said as she ushered Willow inside.
